Christie’s to Auction Collector Anne H. Bass’ Personal Jewels

The discerning taste of arts patron and philanthropist Anne H. Bass will be on full display next month, as Christie’s presents pieces from Bass’ extraordinary jewelry collection in its Magnificent Jewels auction.

A celebrated figure in high society, Bass—who died in 2020 at the age of 78—amassed a collection that reads like a who’s-who of the world’s most prestigious jewelery designers.

The June 17 auction in New York will feature 26 pieces by iconic jewelers such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Cartier, and JAR. They represent Bass’ decades of collecting and show her eye for exceptional artistry.

Among the highlights is a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels diamond pendant earrings (pictured at top), estimated to fetch between $1.2 million and $1.8 million, and a JAR sapphire, emerald, and diamond necklace (above) that exemplifies the designer’s extraordinary ability at combining precious stones in unexpected ways.

The Bass collection in Christie’s sale boasts an impressive 11 jewels by JAR. Many of these creations are featured in the photo book known as JAR Volume I, adding to their provenance and allure.

Claibourne Poindexter, senior specialist in Christie’s jewelry department, aptly describes Bass’ collection as “a testament to impeccable taste and refinement,” noting that each piece was “thoughtfully selected and deeply personal.”

For those wishing to immerse themselves further in the world of Anne H. Bass, Christie’s is also presenting Anne H. Bass: The New York Interiors. an online sale June 4–18. That auction will include an assortment of jewelry, as well as furniture, artwork, and decorative objects from Bass’ iconic Fifth Avenue apartment, which was designed by Mark Hampton.
