I can’t stop thinking about the fact that (at least according to Pinterest data) Gen Zers are jonesing for brown and yellow stones in their engagement rings. While Pinterest’s recent wedding trends report specifically called out citrine as a searched-for center stone, this Antika ring with a different yellowish gemstone should satisfy the demand quite nicely.
It’s not that I don’t enjoy citrine, or any other yellow-orange gemstone for that matter, but I’ve struggled to find anything that could convince me of the color’s longevity for an engagement ring. Then I saw this gorgeous piece of vintage-inspired goodness from Thailand-based Antika, and it instantly made sense.
The stone here has a similar hue as citrine, plus the advantage, as sapphire, of being harder and more durable. Just under 4 cts. of yellow sapphire are arranged in an invisible setting that evokes the styles of the 1920s, when multiple smaller gemstones set sans prongs gave the appearance of a much larger stone (for a lesser price).
I love how these juicy gems in an alluring art deco shape are paired with a yellow gold and diamond shank—an old-meets-new aesthetic that could have wide appeal. When I worked in retail, in a store that specialized in vintage and estate jewelry, there was often the discussion of vintage versus vintage style. While true vintage offers both the thrill of the hunt and an incredible window on the past, some customers preferred that their pieces were made new—you’d be amazed at how many customers thought old jewelry could carry a curse, and some were concerned about finding a repair person, if needed, who could work with vintage.
I will always go for a good vintage piece, but I love that modern odes exist for those customers who want to blend both worlds if that’s what makes them comfortable. And Antika’s ring here is a fine example of just that.
The jeweler will be showcasing at JCK Las Vegas, in the Thailand neighborhood, from June 6 to 9.
